Gergely Gyurta was Éva Risztov's co-host of Sportrádió's morning show on Wednesday. The junior European champion in the 1500m freestyle, European short-course champion, and World Championship bronze medalist in both short and long courses took this opportunity to announce that he retires from competitive swimming.
„I've been swimming since I was four, and I've achieved a lot of good results, but now it's time to say that it was nice, it was good, but now I have to stop. For example, to start a family,” said Gergely Gyurta.
„I have not been able to enjoy certain experiences in life because of sport, but now it's time to focus on them.”
Gyurta (31) said he discussed his choice with several people, including his brother, Olympic champion Dániel Gyurta.
„Eventually, I had to give up swimming. I could keep up with the youngsters less and less. It was a difficult decision to make because my life has been all about swimming,” said Gergely Gyurta, who has two degrees (one in finance and accounting and one in commercial marketing), which means he is ready for civilian life after competitive sport.
